Death, Dignity, Wartime Chaplain

[October 27,  2019]
New Page Title.
Our veterans deal with life, safety, risk and death. Our nation is in its longest-ever wartime stance. Now the meaning of living and the letting-go of the life of loved ones can be dramatically heavy on one’s family
[I will transfer my Death With Dignity resources page from my old teaching site. For now check with your support specialist or a leader in your life.]

Below: Thoughts drawn from chaplains I’ve known  one had finished service in 1945 after World War 2 ended. I met him hard at work ministering to the spirits and souls of a nuclear bomber wing  Those people’s needs were crushing him and he cried as we shared from his private Hell  He was heroic in his being an anchor for families of those who May someday never come back

The film clip below of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" is more uplifting than the one on my Home page.  However, war is always costly.
Whenever possible I want my services for Combat and War-Exposed Veteras to be pro bono.] The text on this page is adapted from deliberations of the Board of Directors during Routefinders' initial months. [Photo to the right: Here I am at Memorial Day 2014 on the DC Mall with my father's Boy Scout walking staff near the many monuments to those who served in uniform.

[See Dr. Porges' polyvagal theory Info below*] Note: Dr. Van Der Kolk emphasizes that trauma treatment can benefit women and children too. He said that for every one veteran, there are nine women who have been traumatized and that the treatments that work for military veterans also can be part of the help that benefits women and children.
The book, The Body Keeps the Score , is written about trauma veterans (whether civilian or military trauma, I call survivors Veterans of Trauma). The author is a psychiatrist who now has changed his mind and is respectful of anyone who has been traumatized and he says that he no longer "admonishes" people, or push them. He respects their process as he works with them to give them control over their life.

This video below is recently compiled at the Washington National Cathedral -- an unexpectedly clear look at what Sacrifice means to those who have sacrificed in many ways:

This clip is from the year-long documentary that followed a unit in Afghanistan. I've met soldiers who were there.

This next poetic inspiration by internationally respected David Whyte was done for people who may call themselves, People of the Book, who know what it is to look upward and inward and seek the feeling of coming Home:

Below are some video images taken during the Concert for Valor honoring veterans of all eras. We saw active military and veterans and families. It was not all smiles. The helicopter overhead in this instance was a sign of friendly presence, much different than some veterans used to associate with the sound. Concert for Valor site .

Routefinders has contacted the Washington National Cathedral [ site ] because they invite and welcome people of "all faiths and none" to walk their intricate grounds and hallways because the Cathedral has recently been declared the nation's home for spiritual support.

[Below is from the Routefinders site earlier template:]
I'm a veteran and I am in support of all veterans and their families, as well as their communities. Additions are planned for this page. [See also my republished teaching blog: Flickerbacks for Veterans of All Kinds .]

Gold Star Wives national organization whose 2015 meeting in Seattle I attended. Superb women moving on with their lives yet vulnerable to the memories. We are here for them as they were there for their deceased spouse.

Our Nation Is Still At War -- Patriotic version of film clips.
Superb film excerpt showing men and boys motivated to do the wartime work...in another century. [I watched it in theater 5 times and several more on DVD in my home office.] Today's uniformed service is much different, but Family, Friends and Community can still be central in the minds and hearts of those who join.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.  With Russell Crowe and Ralph Bellamy.
Treating veterans is an important challenge after they are welcomed home.

New: For the entire family -- Integrated Listening Systems (iLs) sound and movement therapy system, iLs Home Rental Program. This is now known to give positive results for trauma rehab as well as general boost for test-taking, memory, coordination. See my clinical site's Integrative Listening Systems page for more information. Here is the link to the latest flyer on economic access to this equipment which can be used by the whole family: iLs Home Rental Program [PDF]

Addition: If your Circle of Care includes only professionals who practice with the model known as "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy" (CBT), please read the following.

CBT is designed to meet very basic, "grunt-level" tasks of "getting the job done." My intent is for you to eventually take command of your own life and exercise your inner "Dynamis" or Creative aspect. CBT's historical usefulness is respected but is not included in the approaches that I and others in the Coherence Therapy network recommend.

For more, consult the Coherence Psychology Institute (
www.CoherenceTherapy.org ).

On my clinical site, read about Coherence Therapy and options for "building a better brain":

Coherence Therapy: Unlocking the Emotional Brain --

Interview by psychologist and educator David Van Nuys, Ph.D. about recent "Developments in Neuropsychotherapy", with Dr. Laurence Heller.[ link to interview page ]. That podcast (ShrinkRapRadio.com) includes the reading of my "letter to the editor" about my support of his new position as official broadcaster on Armed Forces Radio Network. [Note: Later "Doctor Dave" describes why over the ensuing months he realized that their endeavor and his plans were not a good match, so he did not further pursue that possibility. Things change...]

Those who've followed my career know that I highly recommend that the general public as well as health care professionals listen to the psychology podcast interviews of educator and psychologist, David Van Nuys, Ph.D. He founded Shrink Rap Radio which has weekly interviews and a newsletter to announce upcoming events. After listening to his programs I began my Blog and founded DCNN.pro. Here are two podcasts about mental health and naturopathic medicine contributions: Orthomolecular Medicine and Mental Health with Jonathan Prousky, ND , and Functional Medicine with Naturopath and Psychoanalytic Therapist Dr. Stephen Ducat .

I recently participated in a workshop titled, Healing the Wounds of War. [site: TraumaHealing.com ]

Major recommendation for Active/Veterans/Family/Community:

Here is the cover of Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain...an Inside-Out Guide to the Emerging Adolescent Mind -- Ages 12-24. You yourself had a "Teenage Brain" at one point in your life. By age 24 you lived half your life with that unusual structural situation. Read about it and learn how to understand and respect what you did and what others did to you during that time. Then turn, stand where you are today, and decide use that new knowledge to guide your choices of action and therapies and social environment to change your future.
See the book by Dr. Siegel, Brainstorm : [ link ]
Below is Dr. Siegel's clear definition of the Mind. It was given to computer programmers at "Google University" and is very easy to understand. His definition is based on neuroscience such as "mirror neurons" so that the Mind is defined as being inclusive and also outside of the physical body. Short form of the definition: The Mind is a Process that Regulates the Flow of Energy and Information.

Below : a video introduction to the Trauma treatment insights that flow from the Polyvagal Theory of autonomic nervous system structure research of Stephen Porges, Ph.D.:. [ my correlations of his work with other insights on my Information Site ].
